Wave, invoicing only: options if invoices are all you used Wave for
Wave is not shutting down. But in 2026 it moved bank connections and extra users to the paid Pro plan, and it has told users outside the US and Canada that they can no longer send invoices from it. If you never used the bookkeeping side, here is an honest look at what changed, when staying on Wave is the right call, and when a small invoice-only tool fits better.
Wave facts below are as of Oct 2026 (read on Wave's own pages on 3 October 2026); sources are listed at the bottom. Plans change, so check them before deciding. Corrections welcome via our contact page.
What actually changed at Wave (and what did not)
- Wave is still operating. Its pricing page still lists a free Starter plan with unlimited estimates, invoices, bills and bookkeeping records, and a Pro plan at US$19/month or US$190/year.
- 1 June 2026: legacy accounts moved to Starter. Wave's help centre says that on 1 June 2026, legacy businesses (created before the Jan/Feb 2024 plan launch) that do not use Wave payments, payroll or another paid Wave service were migrated to Starter. Bank connections, auto-import and collaborator access now need Pro. Starter keeps invoices, estimates and bills, the option to accept online payments, manual bank-statement upload, reconciliation and reports.
- Outside the US and Canada. Wave has focused only on those two countries since November 2020. Its help centre (updated 8 Sep 2026) says users elsewhere can no longer send invoices or reminders through Wave, though invoices can still be shared as a PDF or link and existing accounts remain active for now ("this may change in the future").
- Sending by email. Per the same article, sending invoices or reminders through Wave is part of the online payments feature or the paid Pro plan.
We have not found any Wave announcement that it is closing the invoicing feature, so we are not claiming that.
Stay on Wave if…
- Your business is in the US or Canada and the free Starter plan still does what you need. It is free and does more than invoices.
- You want Wave to email invoices, take card payments on them, or keep your books and bank feeds in one place.
- You are fine paying US$19/month for Pro if you need bank connections.
An invoice-only tool may fit if…
- You only used Wave to produce invoice PDFs and keep a client list, and never touched bank feeds or reports.
- You are outside the US and Canada and want something that is not tied to a region.
- You would rather pay once than monthly, and you do not want another cloud account holding your client details.
Wave vs Kitebill for invoice-only use
| Wave Starter / Pro | Kitebill | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Starter: free. Pro: US$19/month or US$190/year (per business). | Free: 3 clients, 10 invoices. Pro: US$29 one-time. 30-day refund. |
| Account | Cloud account required. | No account. Data stays in your browser (local storage) and the app works offline after the first load. |
| Invoice PDFs | Yes (PDF or link). | Yes: print or save as PDF, English, English+Arabic or English+Urdu labels. |
| Multi-currency | Per Wave; not checked in detail here. | Yes: your own exchange rate and a payment-fee field. |
| Email invoices from the app | Yes, via online payments or Pro (US/Canada). | No. You download the PDF and send it yourself. |
| Online card payments | Optional, 2.9% + $0.60 per card transaction on Starter. | No. You list bank, Payoneer, Wise or PayPal details on the invoice. |
| Bookkeeping, bank sync, reports | Yes (bank connections need Pro). | No. Kitebill is not accounting software. |
| Quotes, recurring invoices | Estimates on Starter. | No quotes or recurring invoices. You can duplicate an invoice in one click. |
| Multi-device sync | Yes (cloud). | No. Data lives in one browser; use the JSON backup to move it. |
Honest trade-offs
- The free Kitebill plan stops at 3 clients and 10 invoices. If you have more, you need Pro (US$29 once) or Wave's free Starter may suit you better.
- Because data is stored in your browser, clearing site data without a backup deletes it. Export a JSON backup now and then.
- Kitebill will not import your past Wave invoices. Keep those in Wave, or as PDFs. You can import a client list from CSV (Name, Email, Address, Currency): up to 3 clients free, unlimited on Pro.
Try it without moving anything
- Make one invoice in the free invoice generator. No signup, nothing uploaded. Print or save as PDF.
- If the layout suits you, use the app to keep clients and see what is overdue.
- Check the pricing page before you decide on Pro.
